LCSR Sociologists in King Arthur's Court

Evgenia Bystrov, Sofya Lopatina and Ekaterina Turanova shared his experience of participating in the Essex Summer School

The 46th Essex Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis took place at the University of Essex, Colchester (United Kingdom) at July 8 – 16, 2013, Evgenia Bystrov, associate researcher at LCSR, Sofya Lopatina and Ekaterina Turanova, research assistants at LCSR, are sharing their experience of the 3rd session of the summer program.

Sofya and Ekaterina: We participated in course on Data Analysis and Statistical Graphics with R, and Evgenia had chosen Pooled Time-Series Cross-Sectional Analysis. The course on Data Analysis and Statistical Graphics with R was very advanced and challenging. The professor who offered this course, Martin Elff, was a great lecturer. He encouraged student engagement and dialogue. The atmosphere in the class was very friendly and stimulating; we learned a lot of small hints that are really helpful in our everyday work on various research projects. Summer school participants from all over the world discussed their research and helped each other understanding new material.

Evgenia: I took part in Essex Summer School two years ago, and it was exciting for me to come back. Every time I come here, I meet old friends and make new ones. Besides the academic program, there is a rich social program that facilitates most fascinating exchange of ideas, research experience and general interests. The third session is the most demanding in terms of density and complexity. The course I took on time-series cross-sections (or cross-sectional time series) is the most inclusive course in this session's program since it covers the material of other courses offered here as well. I can warmly recommend it to those interested in acquiring new professional skills and deepening their knowledge of advanced statistics.
