Determinants of mothers' employment in Russia

Tatiana Karabchuk's new paper

The article of Tatiana Karabchuk, deputy head of LCSR, called "Determinants of  mothers' employment in Russia", co-written with Mary Nagernyak, was published in the Journal of Social Policy Studies (№ 1, 2013).
The article is dedicated to the problem of combining childcare and work for women in Russia. The authors are trying to clarify one of the key issues of social policy: what determines females choice between work and being a housewife. The main conclusions of the research is that the presence of children under 3 years old significantly reduces the chances for women to enter the labor market and greatly limits the amount of working hours that can be offered. When children reach the age of 7 years, the probability of employment for a woman is increasing, as well as the number of her working hours. The presence of a spouse/partner increases the chances for a woman to have a job, but the number of working hours that she can offer is declining. Woman’s employment and amount of working hours is also determined by the proportion of income which woman earns to the family budget.
Laboratory staff congratulates Tatiana and wishes her further scientific success!
