An interview with Marharita Fabrikant in `Kommersant.ru`

An interview with Marharita Fabrikant, associate researcher of LCSR, was published on the website of Russian newspaper "Kommersant”. An article is titled "How education prevents the formation of national pride."

An interview with Marharita Fabrikant, associate researcher of LCSR, the author of a comparative study " Why So Proud? Individual and Country-Level Predictors of National Pride", was published on the website of Russian newspaper "Kommersant”. An article is titled "How education prevents the formation of national pride."

Marharita reports that the feeling of pride in a country negatively correlates with high level of education, as was evidenced in a number of sociological researches. However, Fabrikant doubts that this scientific conclusion would influence the Russian government`s decision to spend 1.85 billion rubbles on `patriotic education` until 2020. As Marharita finds such measures ambiguous she also discusses the distinctions between feelings of patriotism and pride in the country.

"I find it erroneous to believe that the feeling of pride in the country is inevitably an integral part of patriotism. Patriotism can be defined as the absolute and unconditional love for ones country, and may be not related to the recognition of the countries` merits. I love my country, because this is my country, and how good it is and how much I am proud of it - is another matter. Consequently, pride is quite an independent phenomenon". Marharita Fabrikant explained in the April conference of the Higher School of Economics.
