Russian society: from opinions to understanding

Russian Sociological Congress news

During the Fourth Russian Sociological Congress a round table on the topic “Russian society: from opinions to understanding” was held by the LCSR on October 23rd.

That event was held in a building of the Academy of Science of the Republic of Bashkortostan. Organizers provided a well equipped auditorium. Scholars from Kemerovo, Kalmykia and Novosibirsk were among the participants. Tatiana Karabchuk and Anna Almakaeva were chairmen of the roundtable.

The section was opened by Evgeniy Shekotin, a sociologist from Novosibirsk. He gave a speech on risk approach towards the quality of life. Evgeniy maintained that it is very important for measuring this indicator to consider not only achieved level of quality of life but also possible losses.

Vladimir Kozlov and Julia Zelikova’s reports were devoted to evaluation of status and subjective well-being of older people in comparative perspective. In both presentations authors found out that the status of older people changed in the modern society.

Natalia Firsova demonstrated results of her study of subjective perception of freedom in different countries. She concluded that in modern countries postmaterialist values positively affect individual perception of freedom in developed countries and negatively affected it in developing countries.

Anna Shirokanova’s spoke about familism as a model of solidarity in post-communist countries. She showed that in a case of relatively low level of family values and high level of indifference a hypothesis of rational model of participance in atomized society for post-Soviet countries could be confirmed.

In her presentation Anna Almakaeva looked at the trust towards in-group and out-group. According to her results the connection between these two levels of trust is ambiguous and depends on modernization in particular country.

Olga Gryaznova presented preliminary results of her new research project. She revealed that welfare state affects the relationship between state social support and perception of social policy aftermaths differently depending on dominant values of a society.

Natalia Soboleva explored gender attitudes in the “world of work”. According to her analysis they depend both on the level of development of a country and such individual characteristic as sex, education, religiosity and area of work.

The round table was closed by Tatiana Karabchuk's report. During her presentation she showed that liberal labor law raises subjective well being of both mothers and women without children.
