An Interview with Peter Meylakhs in the Renowned Saint-Petersburg Newspaper `Vedomosti`

Peter Meylakhs, a Senior Research Fellow of LCSS, gave an interview to the prime newspaper of the city `Saint-Petersburg Vedomosti` addressing an acute problem of drugs policy in Russia and other countries around the world.

Peter Meylakhs, a Senior Research Fellow of LCSS, gave an interview to the prime newspaper of the city `Saint-Petersburg Vedomosti` addressing an acute problem of drugs policy in Russia and other countries around the world. The cross-cutting theme of counter-narcotics is one of the most essential today, many countries are trying to recognize best ways to reduce the level of drug use and avert the overall immunodeficiency virus environment. In case of Russia, the problem becomes urgent as HIV epidemics are growing in a fast pace, which is not reflected in Media. In an interview Peter talked about the possibility of building a special statistical index to compare drug policies of different countries to match it with HIV epidemic trends. Peter highlighted that, for example, in the Netherlands the attitude to drugs is liberal and in Sweden, on contrary, is conservative. However, going hand in hand with injecting drug usage the Dutch situation with HIV somehow turned out to be more optimistic than in Sweden. As for Russia, a professor claimed that the population of the country "has not ever been frightened by drugs related problems", so one might expect that Russian government will perform in a "special" way regarding to drug usage...
