3rd LCSR International Conference starts tommorow in Moscow

3rd International Research Conference of the Laboratory for Comparative Social Research starts tomorrow at the Higher School of Economics (Moscow).

The LCSR International Research Conference is expected to be one of the major events of 2013 in social sciences in Russia. It provides a great opportunity for scholars and students interested to attend lectures by the leading academics in the field of sociology and political science.

The plenary session will include reports of renowned social scientists such as professor Ronald Inglehart  (University of Michigan, HSE), who will present his paper on correlation between the global value change and decline of violence all over the world. Professor Christian Welzel  (Leuphana University, HSE), the vice-president of theWorld Values Survey  association and a long-term co-author of professor Inglehart, will present a report on “Paradox of Democracy”. The key question of his research is why mass demand for democracy often coexists with authoritarian regime.  He argues that the necessary condition for establishing democratic institution is a solid grounding in emancipative values

Professor Eduard Ponarin  (HSE, St. Petersburg) will present a research on causes of anti-American sentiment among Russian elites and masses. Bogdan Voicu (Romanian Academy of Science) will give a talk on the impact of international migration experience on individual values. Peter Schmidt (HSE, Moscow; Justus-Liebig University, Giessen) and Arye Rattner (University of Haifa) will also address the topic of migration. Professor Schmidt’s presentation is devoted to the formation of segregation preferences in Germany while Professor Rattner focuses on the integration of Russian immigrants to Israeli society.

The main object of Francesco Sarracino’s (STATEC, Luxembourg) lecture is the determinants of subjective well-being. In his paper, he shows that social capital is at least as important as economic growth for the level of happiness in society. Musa Shteiwi’s (University of Jordan, Amman) research investigates identity of Palestinian refugees and their attitudes towards to the right of return.  Elena Prutskova (St. Tikhon’s Orthodox University, Moscow) will present a project “Orthodox Monitor” which aims to study influence of religion on values and practices in various spheres of life in Russia. Malina Voicu (Eurolab, GESIS) will deliver a report on her study of the impact of religious heterogeneity on various social processes.

The program of the conference also includes a number of panels on various research areas such as migration, ageing, gender and family relations, and religiosity and tolerance, with a focus on Russia. Panels on topical issues like corruption, voting patterns and political preferences of population, and ethnic relations are also scheduled. Reports on the research projects  carried out within the LCSR with the grant provided by the government of the Russian Federation also will be presented.

The conference will continue to November, 16. Working language is English. We would be glad to see scholars, experts, policymakers and anyone interested in issues of contemporary social studies at our conference.

Further information about the conference is available on the LCSR website. We will provide daily reports from the conference. After the conference brief summaries and PDF-versions of the most interesting presentations will be uploaded to the LCSR website.
