On 6-10 November, the 2nd International Annual Research Conference, “Social Change in Cross-National Perspective”, of the Laboratory for Comparative Social Research (LCSR) took place at the Higher School of Economics (HSE), Moscow.
More than 50 social scientists from universities and research centers across Russia, Ukraine, Belorussia, Israel, Italy, Hungary, Romania, Poland, Germany, and the United States participated in the conference. Our laboratory is gradually finding acceptance in the international academic community. This year we had over twenty participants from foreign universities, which includes centers of excellence such as Harvard University, Columbia University, the University of Michigan, the University of Essex, and the European University Institute in Florence.
The 1st International Annual Conference (2011): “Comparative Sociology in Quantitative Perspective”
The LCSR conference "Comparative Sociology in Quantitative Perspective" took place in Moscow from the 25th to 28th November. It marked an important phase in the life of the Laboratory, because the first results of research work were consolidated. At the end of November 2010, the rector of HSE, Yaroslav Kuzminov, signed the decree for the establishment of a new laboratory funded by the Russian government’s mega-grant program. A network of young specialists was recruited in this year. These scholars gather several times a year to discuss their research findings, share ideas, and further develop their projects. Staff researchers work in Moscow and Saint-Petersburg, while associated researchers are spread across Russia, Belorussia, Ukraine, and Germany.

The Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg and Ronald Inglehart (University of Michigan) won a large grant from the Russian government. The creation of a contemporary international research center headed by prominent international scientists is a condition for grant approval. The conference on 16th of December was the first step towards this project. It was organized by the Laboratory for Comparative Social Studies, HSE St. Petersburg. The conference was devoted to the prospect of establishing an international research network.
