Is There Crisis of Democracy in Europe? An Invited Paper by Hanspeter Kriesi

Event ended

Laboratory for Comparative Social Research is pleased to announce a special online session of the XXIst April International Academic Conference organized with the support of HSE University. This seminar will feature a presentation by Hanspeter Kriesi, Chief Research Fellow at LCSR and Professor at the European University Institute.

Professor Kriesi will discuss one of the most topical issues in European politics today, namely the crisis of democracy. Kriesi will argue that the notion of “crisis” is highly exaggerated. The presentation will focus on three key dimensions. First, the perspective of citizens and their views on the state of democracy in Europe. Second, the perspective of voters and reasons for the rise of populist politics. Third, the perspective of elites and constrains imposed on populists in power by institutions, parties, international factors, market, and citizens. According to Kriesi, even though there are reasons for concern about democracy in Europe, there is no reason for panic.

Date & time: May 14, 5:00 p.m. (GMT+3).

Working language is English.
