Topic: “Factors of foreign lobbyism in the USA (2001-2018)  ”
Speaker: Arina Uksusova (MA student, EU SPb)

The Laboratory for Comparative Social Research announces the next  regular seminar, which will be held in Saint-Petersburg (Sedova st., 55-2, room 303) on October, 31 at 16-45 p.m. Arina Uksusova (MA student, EU SPb) will deliver a report “Factors of foreign lobbyism in the USA (2001-2018)

Nowadays lobbyism can be treated not only as the legal alternative to corruption in consequences of government and public control and legislative regulation but also a political practice that is rather open and transparent. Lobbyism is a powerful political lever of pressure and special channel of influence through which various actors and interest groups can pursue their interests within public authorities of one or another state.Within this research, the author takes an attempt to bring to light the main predictors of foreign lobbyism in the USA from 2001 to 2018 based on the foreign countries lobbying activities’ data that is contained in the Foreign Agents Registration Act Reports to the US Congress drawn by the US Department of Justice.Using the framework of game theory approach, particularly the “nested games” theory by G. Tsebelis and quantitative analysis, particularly the statistical model of multivariate regression, the author came to the conclusion that one of the most significant predictor of foreign lobbyism in the USA is the foreign country’s membership in the international organizations, in the case of this research  it is a membership in the NATO, the OAS and NAFTA. Moreover, such approach allows taking into consideration the specific nature of foreign lobbyism in the USA and answering the question about why some countries lobby their interests more intense than other ones.
