Topic: "The opportunities for studying determinants of the attitudes towards migrants in Russia using data from the European Social Survey"
Speaker: Natalia Mastikova (research fellow at the Institute of Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, assistant professor at State Academic University for Humanities)

The Laboratory for Comparative Social Research announces the next regular seminar, which will be held in Moscow (Krivokolenny Pereulok, 3, room 3-333) on October, 24 at 16-45 p.m. Natalia Mastikova (research fellow at the Institute of Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, assistant professor at State Academic University for Humanities) will deliver a report “The opportunities for studying determinants of the attitudes towards migrants in Russia using data from the European Social Survey”.

Studies of attitudes towards migration in Russia indicate a negative evaluation of the host population regarding migrants and the consequences of their stay. The project discusses opportunities provided by the European Social Survey dataset (ESS) for revealing attitudes towards migrants moving to the country of the respondent as well as for studying the consequences brought by migrants. The following options are considered: 1) constructing generalized indices for studying attitudes toward migration, 2) combining existing ESS waves to study factors affecting attitudes toward migration in the dynamics of years 3) constructing regression models for each wave. The paper discusses in detail the theoretical foundations for studying respondents' attitudes towards migration, distinguishes possible determinants and provides interpretations of the influence of factors.

The potential of qualitative and quantitative methods as a possible option for further research is discussed.
