March, 28 — regular seminar

Event ended

The Laboratory for Comparative Social Research announces the next regular seminar, which will be held in Moscow (Krivokolenny Pereulok, 3, room 3-333) on March, 28 at 17-00 p.m. Natalia Soboleva (Research Fellow, LCSR) will deliver a report “The impact of work values upon the link between life satisfaction and job satisfaction: the evidence of the EVS data”.

The study aims to disclose the impact of intrinsic and extrinsic work values upon the link between life and job satisfaction. Extrinsic values are tangible outcomes or rewards of work, such as high income, material possessions, generous holidays, working conditions, a good pension plan, job security. Intrinsic values are intangible rewards related to the process of work, for example an interesting job, autonomy, challenges, the opportunity to be creative, recognition, achieving something that has impact on others (Deci 1975). The European Values Study 2008-2009 is used as dataset. The sample is limited to those who have jobs. Our results confirm findings from the literature that intrinsic motivation increases life satisfaction (Vansteenkiste 2007). It is in line with self-determination theory that their pursuit facilitates the satisfaction of the basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness (Deci & Ryan, 2000; Kasser, 2002). However, our important contribution is that individuals with intrinsic motivation are more satisfied with their lives only given that they are satisfied with their jobs. Sharing extrinsic values influences negatively life satisfaction. This effect remains irrespectively whether the person likes his job or not. The findings are also of practical significance. As intrinsic motivation positively influences job satisfaction as well as job outcomes (Vansteenkiste et al. 2007) it contributes to the economic development. Thus, it is important to stimulate the intrinsic motivation and give the opportunities to realize this motivation in jobs. Otherwise it will reduce the well-being of people who share such values. Since job outcomes depend on job satisfaction, for economic development it is important to stimulate the intrinsic motivation and give the opportunities to realize this motivation in workplace.
