Abstract
The complex nature of the relationship between personal trust and individual subjective well-being continues to be actively studied. To explain differences in people’s well-being, this research uses the conceptual framework of cultural (mis)fit. It is assumed that personal trust will show a stronger association with individual well-being when the person resides in a more trusting environment. That is, what matters is not the person’s trust itself but how similar or dissimilar they are to other residents of their country. The analysis was conducted using the joint World Values Survey and the European Values Study dataset (2017-2022). To track the effect of (mis)fit, multilevel modeling with cross-level interactions was used. Results show the presence of an interaction effect between individual- and country-level trust on personal well-being. Differences in interaction effects are observed in more trusting and less trusting countries, as well as between two types of trust. The role of (mis)fit is discussed in the context of other country-level indicators: GDP per capita, levels of corruption, and democracy.
