Abstract

The ideological gender gap, which emerged originally in Western democracies, has recently been noticed in other nations as well. This study aims to explore whether this trend has reached Russia. Using data from the R. Inglehart Laboratory for Comparative Social Research (2019-2020), the paper analyzes the following set of values: equality of opportunities, freedom of choice, tolerance towards diversity, and trust in state institutions. According to the developmental theory of the gender gap, the shift towards post-materialist values is associated with generational change. The younger generation holds more progressive views, and young women tend to hold these views more often. Thus, the shift towards post-materialist values is considered to be faster among women, forming a gender gap in ideology. The results of the regression analysis indicate that young men and women in Russia have different views on gender equality, justification of abortion, divorce and homosexuality, and tolerance of outgroups. At the same time, the gap in values related to gender equality decreases for older generations, while the gaps in other values do not follow this pattern.
