The Laboratory for Comparative Social Research announces the next  regular seminar, which will be held in Moscow (Myasnitskaya st., 20, room 101) on November 26 at 18-00 p.m. Alejandro Moreno (ex-president of the World Association for Public Opinion Research) will deliver a report “Social and Political Trust in Latin America and Sub Saharan Africa”.

The study examines the patterns of social and political trust in developing countries from Latin America and Sub Saharan Africa. The author uses survey evidence from the regional barometers (Latinobarómetro and Afrobarometer) to document and analyze the levels and dynamics of social trust and trust in political institutions. The trends are mixed, some countries showing gains in trust and some others losses. Moreover, as democracy has developed in most of these countries, should we expect a rise in social and political trust? Besides showing a wealth of data on trust in gathered in these contexts during the last two decades, the author discusses whether conceptual frames developed in the Western democracies are appropriate to understand trust dynamics in these developing settings.
