June, 27— regular seminar

Event ended

Topic: “Religiosity, Denomination, and Anti-Immigrant Attitudes in Europe: A Comparative Analysis of the ESS Data”
Speaker: Ilya Dorkhanov (MA student, HSE)

The Laboratory for Comparative Social Research announces the next  regular seminar, which will be held in Saint-Petersburg (Sedova st., 55-2, room 303) on June, 27 at 17-00 p.m. Ilya Dorkhanov (MA student, HSE) will deliver a report “Religiosity, Denomination, and Anti-Immigrant Attitudes in Europe: A Comparative Analysis of the ESS Data”

In this paper, the author analyzes the relationship between religiosity of the Europeans and anti-immigrant attitudes using the European Social Survey (ESS) dataset. Religiousness is examined in terms of two major factors: religious affiliation and individual religiosity level. Both individual variables and their interaction effects are analyzed. Beside individual-level variables, country-level variables (historically dominant religion and average religiosity level) are also taken into account. Building on the social identity theory, religious compassion theory, and theory of marginality, the author employs regression analysis in order to reveal the links between explanatory variables and attitudes towards various immigrant groups. According to the results, self-identification with Christian denominations (Catholicism and Protestantism) is not in itself associated with anti-immigrant sentiments, while the religiosity level plays a different role in different country contexts and in relation to different immigrant groups (European and Muslim).
