November, 22 — regular seminar

Event ended

Topic: “Behind the Glimpse: Socio-Demographic Factors Predicting Visual Impairment in Ghana”
Speaker: Sally Sonia Simmons

The Laboratory for Comparative Social Research announces the next regular seminar, which will be held in Moscow (Krivokolenny Pereulok, 3, room 3-333) on November, 22 at 17-00 p.m. Sally Sonia Simmons (MA student, HSE) will deliver a report “Behind the Glimpse: Socio-Demographic Factors Predicting Visual Impairment in Ghana”.

The study examined the socio-demographic predictors of visual impairment in Ghana. Frequencies, percentages, networks, chi-square and logistic regression were used in analysing data from the World Health Organisation SAGE Wave 1 (Global Ageing and Adult Health) for Ghana (2009). The recorded rate of visual impairment was 52.3%. Age, sex, residence, level of education and employment status were the socio-demographic predictors of visual impairment in Ghana. Given that vision impairment increased with age, sex, education, unemployment and spatial location, public health interventions are required to counter the cumulative vision loss and its consequences among such populations.
