Research Projects:

"Comparative Perspectives of Civic Engagement in Europe" (ongoing)

The current stage of the project is focused on theoretical issues of conceptualizing civicengagement and initial empirical evidence of testing the hypotheses. The research is based onthe European Values Study of 2008; it takes into account 47 countries classified as European.Civic engagement is seen in three aspects: cognition-status-action and conceptualized aspossessing the knowledge, skills, and values needed to enhance the community and theirexpression through attitudes and behaviour. It is seen as the indicator of civil society anddemocracy formation (Mill, Coleman, Tocqueville), at the same time focusing rather on bridgingthan bonding ties in its status and action elements. Attention is paid to the differences of 1)content and actors of civic engagement in Europe and 2) factors that shape civic engagementin its different parts, namely Post-Socialist and developed Europe. In such a way, the focus ofthe paper is to clarify whether in the latter prevail contextual, external factors, while in theformer dominate individual factors of civic engagement.
