"The Roots of Xenophobia": During the past ten years, the radical right parties have re-emerged as an electoral force in Western Europe, as well as in some other stable democracies such as Canada and Australia. Concern about ethnic xenophobia is linked with the negative consequences it may have for the victims directly affected (individual level), as well as national economy (economic level), social stability (social level) and multilateral relationship (international politics level). Given the undesirable consequences of ethnic xenophobia, why do people engage in xenophobia? Earlier research presents a static – cognitive or biological interpretation of ethnic xenophobia. My key concept, based on a dynamic theory of value change such as the Evolutionary Modernization theory, is to demonstrate the impact of the concrete socio-economic processes on ethnic xenophobia. I hypothesize that the surge of ethnic xenophobia in 2014 reflected heightened insecurity due to the Great Recession of 2008-2012 which led to an anti-immigrant backlash in countries that have experienced large flows of immigration in recent decades. Using the empirical data base of WVS and EVS as well as national statistics data, I plan to test this hypothesis in countries that have experienced substantial flows of economically-motivated immigrants (N=33).
