March, 5 — regular seminar
Topic: “Country-level predictors in historical perspective”
Speaker: Andrey Shcherbak (LCSR, Senior Research Fellow)
The seminar will present a critical review of some existing datasets on historical estimates of key country-level social-economic predictors. Although really trustworthy statistical information is available only since the early 19th century, in last decades numerous research institutions collected and reconstructed a lot of historical databases with variables that social scientists often use. We will focus on historical estimates of population, fertility, child mortality, urban population, GDP per capita, various economic activities, homicide, education, political institutions, state integrity, conflicts and many others. These databases will be not only presented but also critically examined.
